Purpose Parental satisfaction is essential for evaluating pediatric care quality and influences healthcare practices and performance. Pediatric patients frequently experience anxiety, affecting their and their parents’ satisfaction. Nurses play a key role in reducing anxiety and improving care interactions. Meeting parents’ expectations shapes long-term outcomes and impacts the hospital’s reputation. While instruments such as the Child ZAP (Zufriedenheit in der Arztpraxis) provide comprehensive measures of satisfaction, their use in Indonesia has not been explored. This study aimed to validate the Child ZAP and offer insights to improve pediatric care quality in Indonesia.
Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 139 mothers whose children were older than 5 years and received treatment at private hospitals. Structured questionnaires were analyzed using partial least squared-structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 4, and a disjoint two-stage method was used to test dimensionality.
Results All hypotheses were significant (p<.05), demonstrating strong support. All Child ZAP dimensions, treated as lower-order constructs, effectively measured parents’ satisfaction as a higher-order construct. Overall parental satisfaction significantly influenced behavioral intention and mediated its relationship with Child ZAP. The mother’s and the child’s age served as moderating factors. The research model exhibited strong predictive power, underscoring pediatric nurses’ pivotal role in improving communication among parents, physicians, and children to ensure quality care.
Conclusion The Child ZAP instrument effectively evaluates parental satisfaction by examining how children interact and communicate with medical staff. It assesses doctors’ engagement with children and their communication skills, highlighting nurses’ essential role in providing family-centered pediatric care.
Purpose This study aimed to systematically review studies on the effect of peer tutoring on pediatric nursing education for nursing students and identify its contents and characteristics.
Methods A comprehensive search was conducted from November to December 2023 across databases including PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, ProQuest, and others. We included both published and unpublished literature in English or Korean. Three reviewers independently screened and selected eligible studies that involved undergraduate nursing students participating in peer tutoring programs focused on pediatric nursing education. We analyzed quantitative outcomes related to learning effects and learner responses. The quality of the studies was assessed using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials and the risk of bias assessment tool for non-randomized studies.
Results Five studies were reviewed, encompassing randomized controlled trials, a non-randomized controlled trial, a cohort study, and a before-after study. These interventions were conducted in school settings or pediatric clinical environments and featured different forms of peer teaching: horizontal, near-peer, and reciprocal. The tutor-to-tutee ratios ranged from 1:3 to 1:36.5. The educational content covered nursing care for major neonatal diseases, communication skills, medication administration, and resuscitation techniques. Significant improvements in cognitive knowledge and communication skills were observed among nursing students. However, there was noticeable variability in the design and reporting of the studies.
Conclusion Peer tutoring programs can effectively enhance pediatric nursing education by improving nursing students’ knowledge and skills. For future meta-analyses, more studies in this field reported according to reporting guidelines are needed.
Purpose Hybrid simulation has emerged to increase the practicality of simulation training by combining simulators and standardized patient (SP) that implement realistic clinical environments at a high level. This study aimed to develop a hybrid simulation program focused on case of pediatric cardiac catheterization and to evaluate its effectiveness. Methods: The hybrid simulation program was developed according to the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) model. And deep learning-based analysis program was used to analyze non-verbal communication with SP and applied it for debriefing sessions. To verify the effect of the program, a quasi-experimental study using a random assignment design was conducted. In total, 48 nursing students (n=24 in the experimental group; n=24 in the control group) participated in the study.
Results Knowledge (F=3.53, p=.038), confidence in clinical performance (F=9.73, p<.001), and communication self-efficacy (F=5.20, p=.007) showed a significant difference in both groups and interaction between time points, and the communication ability of the experimental group increased significantly (t=3.32, p=.003).
Conclusion Hybrid simulation program developed in this study has been proven effective, it can be implemented in child nursing education. Future research should focus on developing and incorporating various hybrid simulation programs using SP into the nursing curriculum and evaluating their effectiveness.

Purpose This study aimed to identify the effects of pediatric nurses’ perception of patient safety culture and their partnership with patients’ parents on pediatric patient safety nursing activities.
Methods This descriptive study was conducted over a two-month period, from October to November 2022, utilizing self-reported questionnaires. The study included 165 nurses, each having at least 6 months of working experience in wards where children were admitted. These nurses were selected from 13 pediatric specialty hospitals, general hospitals, and university hospitals across seven regions. The data analysis was performed using the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program (IBM Corp.) for descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis.
Results The average scores for awareness of patient safety culture, partnership with patients’ parents, and pediatric patient safety nursing activities were 3.37±0.41, 3.94±0.41, and 4.50±0.38, out of 5 points respectively. The factors influencing pediatric patient safety nursing activities were identified as a partnership with patients’ parents (β=.41, p<.001). Among hospital-related characteristics, safety management committee (β=.16, p=.029) and safety management regulations (β=.17, p=.016) were also analyzed as factors influencing patient safety nursing activities. These factors accounted for 29.2% of the explanatory power for pediatric patient safety nursing activities.
Conclusion Based on the above study results, we found that to promote safe nursing activities for pediatric patients, developing and implementing training programs that enhance partnerships with patient’s parents was imperative, and establishing work regulations and a safety management committee to systematically manage safety management tasks was deemed important.
Purpose We developed a virtual reality (VR) program for use in pediatric nursing practicums to help nursing students learn to measure vital signs in children.
Methods The analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model was employed between July 2021 and December 2021 at a university in South Korea. In the analysis phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with four nursing students, two nursing school graduates, and four experts. The topic and contents of the VR program were settled in the design phase. The VR program was developed and subsequently used and evaluated by 20 nursing students and four experts.
Results The contents of the VR program for pediatric nursing practicums included the measurement of vital signs in a newborn baby and a young child, as well as an evaluation system. The mean score for the nursing students' satisfaction with practice was 4.02 out of 5 points. The mean scores for overall satisfaction with the VR program were 4.15 and 4.79 out of 5 points for nursing students and experts, respectively.
Conclusion The VR program developed in this study allows nursing students to practice measuring vital signs in children, thus improving the students' clinical performance in pediatric nursing.

Purpose This study investigated correlations between the actual sleep time 24 hours prior to an examination and the time to achieve chloral hydrate sedation in pediatric patients.
Methods With parental consent, 84 children who were placed under moderate or deep sedation with chloral hydrate for examinations from November 19, 2020 to July 9, 2022 were recruited.
Results Patients' average age was 19.9 months. Pediatric neurology patients and those who underwent electroencephalography took significantly longer to achieve sedation with chloral hydrate. There was a negative correlation between the time to achieve sedation and actual sleep time within 24 hours prior to the examination. Positive correlations were found between the actual sleep time 24 hours prior to the examination and the second dose per weight, as well as between the sedation recovery time and awake hours before the examination.
Conclusion Sleep restriction is not an effective adjuvant therapy for chloral hydrate sedation in children, and sedation effects vary according to pediatric patients' characteristics. Therefore, it would be possible to reduce the unnecessary efforts of caregivers who restrict children's sleep for examinations. It is more important to educate parents about safe sedation than about sleep restriction.

Purpose This systematic literature review and meta-analysis explored extended reality (XR)-based pediatric nursing simulation programs and analyzed their effectiveness.
Methods A literature search was conducted between May 1 and 30, 2022 in the following electronic databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and CINAHL. The search period was from 2000 to 2022. In total, 6,095 articles were reviewed according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 14 articles were selected for the final content analysis and 10 for the meta-analysis. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and the Comprehensive Meta- Analysis program.
Results XR-based pediatric nursing simulation programs have increased since 2019. Studies using virtual reality with manikins or high-fidelity simulators were the most common, with six studies. The total effect size was statistically significant at 0.84 (95% confidence interval=0.50-1.19, z=4.82, p<.001).
Conclusion Based on the findings, we suggest developing standardized guidelines for the operation of virtual pediatric nursing simulation education and practice. Simultaneously, the application of more sophisticated research designs for effect measurement and the combined applications of various virtual simulation methods are needed to validate the most effective simulation methodology.

Purpose The present study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of a pediatric nursing competency-building program for nursing students.
Methods This was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design conducted between October and December 2021. The participants included 40 nursing students (20 each in the experimental and control groups) at a university in a South Korean city. The pediatric nursing competency-building program integrated problem-based learning and simulation into clinical field practice. The experimental group participated in the program, while the control group did not. Data were analyzed using the x2 test, the independent t-test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance.
Results Pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance showed a greater increase in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the change in problem-solving ability in the experimental group was not significantly different from that in the control group.
Conclusion The pediatric nursing competency-building program effectively improved students' pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance.

Purpose Practical training in pediatric nursing gives students the opportunity to apply nursing knowledge to children in a realistic clinical context. Clinical practice faculty (CPF) and clinical nursing instructor (CNI) have played important roles in the pediatric nursing practicum. This study was conducted to develop a protocol to guide clinical practicum in pediatric nursing.
Methods A service design methodology was employed between August 2020 and May 2021 at four universities and four hospitals in South Korea. The participants were five CPFs, five CNIs, five nursing college graduates, and 60 nursing students. The service design process had four phases: discovery, definition, development, and delivery. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and observations. The data were analyzed using content analysis and descriptive statistics.
Results The participants reported needs for providing concrete guidance and explanation, nursing practice experience, and a link between school and the clinical field. A protocol was developed to fulfill the participants' needs. The protocol comprised detailed information, teaching methodology, and partnership to guide students in the pediatric nursing practicum.
Conclusion The protocol developed in this study can be used to provide guidance for students' clinical practice in the field of pediatric nursing.

Purpose This study aimed to identify the mediating and moderating effects of mindset and psychological collectivism, respectively, on the relationship between grit and nursing intention for children with emerging infectious diseases, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), among pediatric nurses.
Methods We conducted a crosssectional descriptive study with 230 pediatric nurses.
Results Grit directly impacted mindset (β=.27, p<.001) and nursing intention (β=.20, p=.001). The direct effect of mindset on nursing intension (β=.28, p<.001) and the indirect effect of grit on nursing intension via mindset (β=.08, p<.001) were significant. Accordingly, mindset mediated the effect of grit on nursing intention. The effects of grit and psychological collectivism (β=.19, p=.003), respectively, on nursing intention were significant. However, the interaction between grit and psychological collectivism was not significant. Thus, psychological collectivism did not moderate the effect of grit on nursing intention.
Conclusion The findings demonstrate the importance of pediatric nurses' grit and mindset on their intended care for patients in critical situations. Cultivating a gritty culture and developing interventions to enhance nurses' personality traits associated with their performance will be crucial, and such measures are especially salient for pediatric nurses to face the new adjustments required in the era of COVID-19.

Purpose This study was conducted to investigate nurses’ perceptions and performance of family-centered care (FCC) at a children’s hospital in Sri Lanka and to explore the feasibility of implementing FCC in the context of the Sri Lankan healthcare system.
Methods A convergent, parallel, mixed-methods design was applied to understand Sri Lankan nurses’ perspectives on FCC. In total, 157 nurses working at a large teritagy children’s hospital responded to a self-report survey and 18 nurses participated in focus group interviews.
Results Of the factors of FCC, family participation in caring for children received the highest score (4.09±0.51) for perceptions, and information-sharing received the highest score (3.54±0.55) for performance. The qualitative data revealed the following five themes: (a) importance of the family in caring for children; (b) helping families during children’s hospitalization; (c) taking steps to implement FCC, even with imperfect knowledge; (d) barriers in the current situation; and (e) suggested strategies to promote FCC.
Conclusion Participants endorsed the concept of FCC and demonstrated some aspects of it in their day-to-day practice. The results indicate a clear knowledge deficit and several challenges, which need to be addressed to effectively implement FCC.

Purpose This study investigated the relationship of the partnership between nurses and parents of hospitalized children with the quality of pediatric nursing care as perceived by pediatric nurses.
Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 90 nurses. The data collected were analyzed using the independent t-test and the Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results The level of partnership between nurses and parents showed significant differences by nurses’ age (t=2.22, p=.029) and marital status (t=2.54, p=.013). The quality of pediatric nursing care was found to significantly differ by the nurses’ age (t=2.62, p=.013), marital status (t=4.17, p<.001), whether nurses had children (t=2.53, p=.020), pediatric ward work experience (t=2.43, p=.020), and total work experience (t=2.51, p=.016). The level of partnership between nurses and parents was positively correlated with the quality of pediatric nursing care (r=.48, p<.001).
Conclusion To improve the quality of nursing care for hospitalized children and their parents, it is important to consider the specific characteristics of pediatric nurses, whose clinical skills should be improved.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a virtual reality simulation and a blended simulation on nursing care for children with asthma through an evaluation of critical thinking, problem-solving processes, and clinical performance in both education groups before and after the educational intervention.
Methods The participants were 48 nursing students. The experimental group (n=22) received a blended simulation, combining a virtual reality simulation and a high-fidelity simulation, while the control group (n=26) received only a virtual reality simulation. Data were collected from February 25 to 28, 2019 and analyzed using SPSS version 25 for Windows.
Results The pretest and posttest results of each group showed statistically significant improvements in critical thinking, problem-solving processes, and clinical performance. In a comparison of the results of the two education groups, the only statistically significant difference was found for critical thinking.
Conclusion Simulation-based education in child nursing has continued to involve high-fidelity simulations that are currently run in many programs. However, incorporating a new type of blended simulation, combining a virtual reality simulation and a high-fidelity simulation, into the nursing curriculum may contribute to the further development of nursing education.

Purpose This study aimed to compare the quality of nursing care as perceived by registered nurses and mothers of hospitalized children in South Korea.
Methods This was a descriptive study that recruited 70 mothers of hospitalized children and 70 nurses in pediatric units in university hospitals as participants. The quality of pediatric nursing care was measured using importance and performance scores for 19 items describing various elements of nursing care. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent t-test.
Results The hospitalized children mothers’mean importance scores were significantly higher than those of the nurses (t=2.94, p=.004). However, there were no significant differences in the mean performance scores of nurses and mothers (t=0.91, p=.363) or between nurses’and mothers’perceptions of quality of nursing care, with the exception of a significant difference for the quality of explanations (t=2.78, p=.006). The quality of explanations was assessed more positively by nurses than by mothers.
Conclusion This study suggests that when developing strategies to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric wards, ensuring that pediatric nurses provide detailed explanations should be considered as a way to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric units.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a model for handoff education for nursing students based on simulation using video and to identify educational effects of a simulated situation in pediatric care units.
Methods Data were collected from May 1 to 30, 2016. Participants were 84 senior nursing students in Seoul (video group: 43, simulation group: 41). Both groups were given a lecture and pre-briefing on handoff education. The simulation group had nursing practice on resolving health issues for respiratory distress using a high-fidelity baby simulator. The video group watched a video recording of a scenario based simulation, and used a summarized handoff situation to practice patient handoff to another student.
Results There was no significant difference between the two groups for handoff self-confidence, problem solving ability, handoff competence (self-assessment of students), or learning satisfaction. Self-confidence increased significantly in both groups. Handoff competency evaluated by the instructor was higher in the video group compared to the simulation group (t=2.33, p=.022).
Conclusion Nursing student education for handoff practice utilizing a video in the pediatric unit was more cost effective. Therefore, it could be a useful educational method for students in learning patient handoff practices and helpful for related research.

Purpose Tonsillectomy is a very common surgical procedure, particularly in children. The purpose of this study was to identify current evidence in nursing research on pediatric tonsillectomy by analyzing and evaluating Korean nursing studies related to pediatric tonsillectomy.
Methods An integrative literature review of Korean pediatric tonsillectomy research was conducted. Databases were searched to identify research that related to nursing care for pediatric tonsillectomy children.
Results Of the 115 studies identified, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. All studies were experimental studies and most of those studies had a quasi experimental design. No correlational studies or qualitative studies were found. Providing nursing information and education for children and their mothers at pre, during, and post tonsillectomy by pediatric nurses were found to be effective in reducing children’s pain and anxiety and their mother’s anxiety and uncertainty, and increasing children’s appropriate sick role behaviors and their mother’s satisfaction with nursing services provided and knowledge related to tonsillectomy.
Conclusion Although most studies reported positive effects in terms of post tonsillectomy outcomes, lack of methodological rigor limits the current evidences for pediatric tonsillectomy nursing interventions. Greater attention to improve methodological rigor for Korean research on pediatric tonsillectomy is needed.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to describe feelings and actions of nurses following withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from children being cared for by the nurses.
Methods Data were collected by in-depth interviews with 7 nurses from different hospitals where children receiving nursing care had life-sustaining treatment withdrawn. The interviews were conducted from August 2016 to February 2017 when all data were saturated. Interviews lasted 30~90 minutes and were conducted 2~3 times per participant. Data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological research methodology.
Results The following factors constituted experiences of nurses working in pediatric wards when life-sustaining treatment was withdrawn from children: “agony and conflict in the aspects of care”, “heavy mind and regret for exhausting care”, “intentionally avoiding parents’ sadness”, “comforting sadness in the heart” and “orientation in the role of caring for children undergoing withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.”
Conclusion Findings indicate that support systems and intervention programs need to be developed so that nurses can understand and wisely deal with experiences of withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from children who receive care from nurses.

Purpose
This descriptive research was conducted to identify educational needs in pediatric nursing handoff training to improve students’ handoff skills.
Methods
Data were collected using a survey with 188 senior nursing students and 48 pediatric nursing professors and clinical nurses. The survey included items on general information as well as experiences in handoff training, necessity, training content, and items for a handoff training program in pediatric nursing.
Results Of the nursing students, 30.5% reported receiving handoff training during their clinical hours. After their handoff training, the students’ confidence index was only 3.78 out of 10. Significantly, 98.3% of the respondents said that pediatric handoff training is necessary. In addition, participants reported that simulation practice (26.5%) is an appropriate educational method, and the time required for handoff training should be 8.16 hrs. Admission process was placed first as the most critical circumstance for handoff (56.8%). High demands were observed for the necessity of training content for patients with respiratory problems.
Conclusion The results of this study show the various educational needs for developing a patient safety pediatric handoff training program to promote nursing students’ skills in handoff.

Purpose This study was done to develop and evaluate an algorithm-based simulation scenario for emergency measures for high-risk newborns presenting with apnea.
Methods A one shot case study design was used to evaluate the algorithm-based simulation scenario. Effects of the developed simulation scenario were evaluated using the Simulation Effectiveness Tool (SET) and the Lasater Clinical Judgement Rubric (LCJR). From March to November 137 senior nursing students completed the simulation using this scenario.
Results The eight-frame simulation scenario was developed based on the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and the nursing clinical judgment process. After use of the scenario, overall scores for SET and LCJR were 21.0 out of 26.0 and 32.4 out of 44.0 respectively. There were no significant differences in scores according to general characteristics. Positive correlation coefficients were identified among overall and subcategories of SET and LCJR. In addition, students provided positive feedback on the simulation experience.
Conclusion Considering that nursing students have limited access to high-risk newborns during their clinical experience and that newborns presenting apnea are common in the neonatal intensive care unit, the simulation scenario developed in this study is expected to provide nursing students with more opportunities to practice emergency measures for high-risk newborns.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify pediatric nurses' attitudes to, and compliance with, standard precautions in the prevention of hospital infections by enhancing their practice of standard precautions. METHODS The participants were 206 nurses who worked in pediatric nursing departments of a general medical institution in Seoul. The questionnaire was a modification of Kim (2008) and consisted of 18 questions about hand washing, personal protective equipment, sharps, linen and patient care equipment. Collected data were processed using SPSS 15.0 WIN. RESULTS Mean scores for attitudes to standard precautions and for compliance with standard precautions were 4.43 (+/-0.83) and 4.22 (+/-0.44) respectively. This difference was statistically significant (t=3.368, p=.001). The nurses' compliance with standard precautions differed significantly according to the general characteristics of age (F=8.705, p<.001), total clinical experience (F=9.426, p<.001), current department experience (F=6.555, p<.001), and education experience (t=0.616, p<.043). There was a positive correlation between attitudes to, and compliance with, standard precautions (r=.156, p=.025). CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that educational programs and policy on infection control and standard precautions for pediatric nurses are needed. Also these results should contribute to baseline data for establishing appropriate clinical policy on infection control.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to analyze papers published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Child Health Nursing (JKACHN) to identify the current state of child health nursing research and recommend directions for future research. METHODS Using analysis criteria developed by the researchers, 233 papers published in JKACHN between 2005 and 2009 were reviewed. RESULTS Both quantity and quality of these papers showed significant improvement compared to before 2005. The number of published papers, the proportion of intervention studies, and studies that involved children directly as participants had increased. However, published papers still leave much to be desired. Quantitative studies were dominant (91.4%) and many of these studies were survey designs (65.7%). Children, especially young children were still less likely to be direct participants. All experimental studies were quasi or pre-experimental studies. There were few qualitative research studies. CONCLUSION Findings of this study indicate that strengthening peer review according to review guidelines will improve the quality of published papers and promote JKACHN as an international journal. Instead of proxy accounts from parents or nurses, research involving direct accounts by children is needed. Child-friendly data collection methods need to be developed and used by child health nurse researchers.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to provide descriptive data about the characteristics of pediatric patients and nursing interventions in Regional Emergency Medical Centers (REMC). METHODS A retrospective design was used to examine the medical records of 4,310 children. The clinical data and nursing terminologies of REMC were analyzed using the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC). RESULTS Male toddlers dominated the sample. The mean age of the children was 3.51 yr. In more than half of the visits, patients arrived between from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., on a weekday. There were only 189 ambulance transports to REMC, (4.4% of visits). The most frequent injuries were due to falls (28.0%) and contusions (27.3%), but the most common reasons for visits were non-injury (73.4%): fever, cough/shortness of breath, seizures, and abdominal pain. Of the 4,310 visits, 27.8% spent 6-24 hr in the REMC, while 33% resulted in hospital admission and 2.1% in transfer to another hospital. Of the 17,929 nursing interventions, 17,909 elements (99.9%) were classified under NIC. All the listed NIC interventions, however, were not reflected in the level of practice demonstrated by REMC nurses. CONCLUSION These results can enhance the understanding of pediatric emergency nursing interventions and can make NIC more applicable.

PURPOSE This research was done to provide fundamental data to improve learning methods in Pediatric nursing and meet the needs of the students in actual nursing by analyzing nurse student experiences with problem-based learning in Pediatric nursing. METHOD Using the 31 Q-samples selected, 20 nursing students from J college were selected as p-samples. The students were personally interviewed in January or February 2008. Result The result of the study showed 3 types. The first type was the "negative resister", who failed to adapt to the problem-based learning and resists negatively. The second type was the "active receiver", who participated in the process of the problem-based learning and received it actively. The third type was the "passive accepters", who accepted problem-based learning but worried because they were familiar only with traditional learning. CONCLUSIONS In this study, problem-based learning was used for classes in the science of pediatric nursing. The findings indicate that preparation for learning and details should be considered when developing and using modules for pediatric nursing. Further study on the development of problem-based learning modules is also indicated.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation of critical thinking disposition and problem solving process, and the simulation-based assessment of clinical competence based on a survey of college nursing students. METHODS In this descriptive correlation study, data for 214 nursing students were analyzed using t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS Critical thinking disposition, problem solving process, and simulation-based assessment of clinical competence averaged 3.76+/-0.46 (out of 5), 3.67+/-0.47 (5), and 1.51+/-0.17 (2), respectively. A significant difference in scores for simulation-based assessment of clinical competence was found between the high-scoring group and low-scoring group in critical thinking disposition. A significant positive correlation was found between critical thinking disposition and nursing assessment, a sub-domain of clinical competence. CONCLUSION The results suggest that success in simulation-based learning requires critical thinking disposition in the nursing students, and their critical thinking disposition plays a positive role in nursing assessment, which evaluates the patient's status in a complex situation. Simulation-based learning programs help assess the students' levels in their clinical judgement and performance, and identify their strengths and weaknesses so that the instructor can evaluate and improve the current teaching method.

PURPOSE This research was a descriptive study of nursing activities observed in nursing simulation during a senior nursing student practicum. Content and frequencies of nursing activities during the simulation practice were identified. METHODS Thirty-six episodes of pediatric nursing simulation were videotaped. Both verbalizations and descriptions of nonverbal behaviors were recorded from the videotapes. The data were coded and analyzed. The coded nursing activities were evaluated for frequency and purpose of interaction. RESULTS Average time per simulation episodes was 27 minutes and ranged from 3.30 to 32.54 minutes. Nursing activities in these simulation episodes included nursing assessments such as vital sign measurement, associated symptom assessment, and check of patient condition, nursing interventions such as medication, tepid water massage, fluid therapy, provision of oxygen, suctioning, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia management, communication such as parent education, procedure guidance, and communication among providers.
Activities in assessment were most frequent, and among them, vital sign measurement and check of patient condition were more frequent than others. CONCLUSION Students showed enhanced nursing activities such as more frequent nursing assessment, communication and interventions in their simulation experience. Therefore simulation experience can be considered as one strategies to provide nursing students with better and more intense practicum experience.

This study was conducted to analyse the current clinical education of pediatric nursing in baccalaurate nursing program, then to give basic data for enhancing the quality of future clinical education of pediatric nursing. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaire by mail from December 2001 to February 2002. The subjects were 29 schools of 50 baccalaurate nursing education programs. The data were analysed by double raters, researcher and assistant researcher.
The results were summarized as follows: 1. Twenty-eight schools had the objectives of the clinical education of pediatric nursing, and 28 schools in pediatric ward, 23 schools in nursery, 22 schools in neonatal intensive care unit(NICU), 15 schools in objectives related to profession by clinical site. 2. Credits on clinical education of pediatric nursing were most 15 schools of 3 credits. 3. The clinical sites were mainly the hospital that sick children were admitted in.
4. The clinical teacher were 9 types including pediatric professor and field nurse. 5. On teacher's role, the professor instructed the case study and conference, and field nurse instructed the patient assignment and nursing procedures. 6.All of schools used explanation and conference as a method of clinical education, 1 or 2 schools used PBL or role play or field study. 7. On clinical education content, most of school included Apgar scoring system, physical examination in newborn assessment, respiration maintenance, temperature maintenance, infection prevention, nutrition, and bath in newborn care. 8. On clinical education content, most of school included care of incubator, phototheraty, infusion, gavage feeding and how to use the instruments in NICU. Eighteen schools included attachment promotion, and 20 schools case study. 9. On clinical education content, most of school included a checklist of nursing procedures, case study, assessment of growth and development in pediatric ward and other sites.
10.There were various evaluation types in scores, measuring items. In conclusion, the results of this study revealed that there were some discrepancy in the objectives and contents, clinical sites on hospital focused, teacher's role, and diversity of measurement items and ratings in clinical education of pediatric nursing. There is a need for a standardization of content, clinical site, and evaluation tool to improve a quality of clinical education of pediatric nursing based on this study.
Considering the rapid change of modern nursing knowledge, it is necessary to make changes in the curriculum of nursing education periodically according to the patient-nursing needs and the students' needs. This means that nursing education has to provide opportunities for the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Also, as the students of the RN-BSN program being all registered nurses, the education program for them is planned differently from the general undergraduate program. This study was conducted to establish the scope of educational contents of pediatric nursing in RN-BSN program. The contents of the pediatric nursing curriculum and its necessity was identified and reviewed. From June 5 to June 30 2000, data were collected from 309 RN-BSN students in 5 nursing schools. The questionnaire used for this study was developed by their researchers and the Korean Nursing Association and consisted of items according to the curriculum contents of pediatric nursing. The data were analyzed through frequency and percentages and was analyzed using SPSSWIN 10.0 programs.
The results were as follows: 1.In the section surveying on the credits of pediatric theory and clinical practice, 3 out of 5 schools had 2 credits in theory (60.0%), and 2 credits for clinical practice in 2 schools, and 2 credits were given to the elective practice in 2 other schools. 2. In analyzing the degree of demand for lecture and clinical practice, 52.1% of students preferred lectures to be given by professors and 53.7% preferred their level of undergraduate knowledge updated and finally most of the students (81.9%) didn't want to do the clinical practice. 3.The students weighted the importance of current curriculum contents as follows : sex education of adolescence(60.8%), high-risk infant(59.5%), sex education of school age children(59.2%), the handicapped children (55.7%), health assessment(52.4%), children with pneumonia(51.5%), children with asthma (47.1%), children with burns(41.1%). In conclusion, there is a need for research to measure the degree of education satisfaction and needs in RN-BSN students and to improve the curriculum contents in pediatric nursing.
