Purpose
This pilot study aimed to develop and conduct an initial evaluation of a self-care improvement program for older school-aged children with atopic dermatitis (AD).
Methods
A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used with 20 children in grades 4–6 diagnosed with AD. The experimental group (n=12) received a 5-week Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB)-based program, which included five 40-minute sessions for children and one 50-minute session for mothers. The control group (n=8) received usual care. Data was collected at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and 4 weeks post-intervention. Outcome variables included AD knowledge, motivation for AD self-care, self-efficacy for managing AD, self-care behaviors, and AD severity. Generalized estimating equations were used for analysis.
Results
Time-by-group interaction effects were observed for AD knowledge (p<.001), personal motivation (p=.011), self-efficacy (p=.034), self-care behaviors (p=.027), and AD severity (p=.039). Improvements in knowledge, motivation, and self-efficacy persisted through follow-up, while changes in self-care behaviors and AD severity were significant only at posttest.
Conclusion
This study provides preliminary evidence that an IMB-based self-care program can improve knowledge, motivation, and self-efficacy in children with AD, leading to better self-care behaviors and reduced symptom severity. These findings support the feasibility and potential usefulness of a structured, theory-based intervention. Further fully powered trials are needed to confirm effectiveness and identify strategies for maintaining long-term outcomes.

An integrative review of studies of condom use among Korean college students

Purpose
The purpose of this study was (a) to synthesize studies of condom use among South Korean college students, and (b) to appraise the quality of each article using Gough's weight of evidence.
Methods
Studies published in English and Korean were searched in electronic databases using the terms "student or college student or university student or undergraduate", "condom", and "Korea*".
Results
Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria, showed appropriate quality, and were therefore selected for review. The variables related to condom use were measured in terms of condom-related factors, factors related to non-condom-related knowledge and attitudes, and other factors. Knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy were associated with condom use, and there were differences in condom-related factors among men and women.
Conclusion
Based on these findings, it was confirmed that sexual education is needed for both men and women to promote condom use. Education on condom use should not only focus directly on condoms, but should also address other aspects of knowledge and attitudes to influence health beliefs. In addition, developing educational programs targeting adolescents and parents will have a positive effect on college students' condom use.

Effects of a First Aid Coaching Program on First Aid Knowledge, Confidence, and Performance of Child Care Teachers

Purpose
The purpose of this study was to develop a first aid coaching program (FACP) and to investigate its effects on the first aid knowledge, confidence, and performance of childcare teachers.
Methods
A Delphi survey that included 16 experts was used to develop the FACP. A total of 60 participants were included to test the effectiveness of the program. The FACP developed using the survey results focused on improving first aid knowledge, confidence, and performance using a coaching-based method. First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performance was assessed using 39 items from the program content.
Results
Using a 3-round Delphi survey, 6 areas and 42 detailed topics for group and individual coaching programs were developed. The knowledge scores were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (t=4.24, p=.001). The confidence scores were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (F=3.89, p<.001). The performance scores were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (t=12.40, p<.001).
Conclusion
Continuous application of the FACP among child care teachers is expected to minimize the harm caused by minor accidents at child care facilities. This program should be formally implemented on a consistent basis.

Needs for Children's Health Promotion Education as Perceived by Child Care Center Teachers and Mothers

Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the needs for children’s health promotion education programs as perceived by child care center teachers and mothers.
Methods
This study conducted a survey of 88 child care center teachers and 70 mothers of preschool children in Seoul from January 4 to February 5, 2016. This study aimed to characterize the current conditions of health promotion education for preschool children and the needs for health promotion education as perceived by child care center teachers and mothers of preschool children.
Results
Areas of high need for health promotion education included lifestyle improvements for preventing diseases in children and awareness of the importance of health in educational objectives, standardized educational manuals, health educators as educators, child care centers as educational places, local health centers as educational support organizations, regular class hours as educational time, role play for training, and actual models in the educational medium. The educational subjects for which a high need was reported included safety and accident prevention, the role of smartphones and TV watching in mental health, and personal hygiene and disease prevention.
Conclusion
These findings suggest that it is necessary to develop a health promotion education program for preschool children.

Development of a Sexual Abuse Prevention Education Program for Elementary School Students Using a Hybrid Application

Purpose
The purpose of this study was to develop a sexual abuse prevention education program for elementary school students.
Methods
Orem’s Self-Care Theory (1995) and Seels & Richey’s ADDIE model (1994) for developing learning materials were applied to develop this program.
Results
The development progress of the program consisted of 5 distinct phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The contents was classified into 6 categories: the definition of sexual abuse, how to deal with sexual abuse, the situational reaction, areas with a high risk for sexual abuse, related organizations, and a wrap-up quiz. The app was easily accessible for elementary school students.
Conclusion
A sexual abuse prevention program using a hybrid app may be an effective way to reach elementary students, and further research for children of various ages is required.

Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral health education on oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status of children from North Korea.
Methods
Participants were 32 North Korean children defectors (15 in the education group, 17 in the control group). The oral health education program, including theoretical training and toothbrush training, was done once a week for 4 weeks. Effects of the education program were assessed for oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status at pretest, 0, and 4 weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA with the SAS program.
Results
Children in the education group showed increased oral health knowledge and behavior over time compared to the control group and an improvement in oral hygiene status including significantly decreased S-PHP and Snyder test for oral micro-organism.
Conclusion
Results indicate that oral health education is effective in improving oral health knowledge, oral health behavior and oral hygiene status. These improvements could lead to a better quality of life for North Korean children defectors.

A Survey of Smartphone-Based Health Education Needs for Parents

Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of smartphones to address parents’ educational needs.
Methods
The participants were parents of children under 18 years old, Participants were 347 parents (222 mothers, 125 fathers). Data were collected from August, 15 to September, 2, 2016 using self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA with the SPSS WIN 21.0 program.
Results
Parents had an average score of 3.30 (±.41) for the need to have smartphone health education. Among the educational subcategories, ‘child and family’ showed the highest average for educational needs (3.40, ±.57). According to the demographic characteristics of the participants, there were significant difference in parents’ age (t=4.354, p=.014), and parents’ who have received health education versus parents who have not (t=2.483, p=.014).
Conclusion
Findings indicate that the smartphone may be an effective educational method for parents.

Application of Dental Health Program for Elementary School Children.

PURPOSE
In this study an analysis was done of participants who were educated using a dental health program as compared to a control group who only used a booklet on the subject. The participants were elementary school children and the education focused on dental health knowledge, behavior, health belief, and self-efficacy.
METHODS
Sixth grade students from two different schools in D-city were assigned to an experimental group which was educated using a dental health program over five weeks and a control group which was educated with a dental care booklet.
RESULTS
The experimental group showed significant increases in knowledge, behavior, sensitivity, severity, benefit, belief, and self-efficacy indicating that the program was effective, but there were no significant differences in self-efficacy, sensitivity, severity, importance, or disability between the two groups. Significant differences between the groups were found for knowledge, behavior, and benefits regarding dental health.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study indicate that a dental health program for elementary school students is effective in increasing their knowledge and behavior regarding dental health but the lack of significant differences in several of the variables in this study may be related to the education provided to the control group using a booklet.

Effects of Dental Health Education on Dental Health Knowledge and Dental Hygiene Status in Preschoolers.

PURPOSE
This quasi-experimental study was conducted to identify the effects of dental health education on dental health knowledge and dental hygiene status in preschoolers.
METHODS
Forty-one children were recruited from two daycare centers, one of which served as the experimental group and the other as the comparative group without dental health education. Dental health education consisted of knowledge-oriented lecture and individual practice with a tooth simulator. The dental health knowledge was measured using a self-report questionnaire and dental hygiene using a dental plague index. The measurements were taken before and after the education program in the experimental group while only before the education program in comparative group.
RESULTS
Increases in dental health knowledge and decreases in dental plague index were observed 4 days after the education and lasted at least 8 days after the education.
CONCLUSION
The findings of this study indicate that dental health care education consisting of a lecture with simulation practice can be effective in improving dental health care in preschoolers at day care center.

PURPOSE
The purposes of this study were to develop an infant sleep health education program using a video for SIDS prevention education and to measure the effects of the program.
METHODS
The infant sleep health education program consisted of presentations and motor images. The formation of educational material was directed by the systematic design of instruction. Participants in this study were 59 primiparous women from postpartum care centers. The instruments used in this study were criterion referenced test items for knowledge about infant sleep health and confidence inventory. Experimental group I was given the treatment of infant sleep health education program. Experimental group II was given the program using a video reinforcement after 2 weeks. On the other hand, control group was given no treatment.
RESULTS
There was a significant increase in knowledge and confidence in the performance of mother's roles of both experimental group I and experimental group II over the control group. No significant difference was founds for knowledge and confidence in the performance of mother's roles between experimental group I and II.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that this program is a very effective intervention for better sleep health in infants by helping the mothers increase confidence in their role performance.

Health Education Needs of Mothers who are Caring for Children with Disabilities.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate the health education needs of mothers who are nurturing children with disabilities.
METHOD
A descriptive study was done and the participants were 108 mothers of children with disabilities such being mentally challenged, developmentally delayed or having a disability involving brain damage. The questionnaire was a health education need assessment with 11 categories(58 items) developed by Han et al. The data were analyzed using SPSS program.
RESULTS
The mean score for health education needs of the mothers of children with disabilities was 3.83 (SD=0.58) out of a maximum 5. The health education need for acquisition of knowledge and information had the highest score (4.40+/-0.54) followed by health education needs for cognitive development and learning (4.31+/-0.64), interpersonal relationships (4.04+/-0.65) and behavior and emotion (4.04+/-0.79). There were significant differences between the children's sex (t=2.08, p=.04), birth order (t=2.17, p=.03), grade of disability (F=3.32, p=.02) and sex education suitable to the child's in age.
CONCLUSION
The health education needs of mothers of children who are disabled were very high and varied. Therefore, it was important to develop comprehensive education programs which include this content and provide opportunities for mothers of children with disabilities to receive this education.

PURPOSE
This study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey to identify school nurses' knowledge, educational needs and providing education about Internet addiction.
METHOD
A total of 198 school nurses working in schools located in Gyunggi Province and the cities of Ulsan, Daegu, and Pohang participated in the study. A self-report scale was used to collect data. It included 53 items measuring school nurses' knowledge, their educational needs and performing related to Internet addiction.
RESULTS
The mean score for knowledge of Internet addiction was 13.12 (SD=3.13), indicating a moderate level of knowledge. The highest frequency, 24.7% of the school nurses agreed that the computer teacher is the appropriate person to do educate on Internet addiction, followed by the school nurse with another teacher (24.2%). Only 40.4% of the nurses had any experience in providing students with education about Internet addiction. The main reason for not providing education about Internet addiction was that there was no time (57.6%). Education was reported most frequently as being provided by the class teacher (36.3%), followed by school nurse (31.3%).
CONCLUSIONS
It is important to expand the role of school nurses in preventing and responding to Internet addiction and to develop training programs designed to further develop their abilities in teaching and counseling.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study were to develop a respiratory communicable disease prevention program for preschoolers and measure it's effects.
METHOD
The respiratory communicable disease prevention program for preschoolers consisted of texts, cartoons, photographs, discussions, demonstrations, puzzle games, die games, compensation/reinforcement, and token economy which were directed under the systematic design of instruction by Dick & Carey. This study was a quasi experimental study under the nonequivalent control group with pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 45 preschool children who are attending 3 different district nursery schools and they were matched by the age, pretest knowledge, and pretest behavior. The instrument used in this study was criterion referenced test items that were developed by a researcher for evaluating the subject's knowledge, attitude, and behavior about respiratory communicable disease prevention. A pretest was administered a week before treatment. Experimental group I was administered by the treatment of respiratory communicable disease prevention program. Experimental group II was administered by above program with token economy program. The posttest was conducted on the eighth day. The third test for behavior was completed 15th day. To determine the effect of the program, the data were analyzed by the SAS 6.12 program with Kruskal Wallis test, ANCOVA, ANOVA, Duncan's test and paired t-test.
RESULT
1) There was a significant difference in knowledge between the experimental groups and control group(F=5.89, P=0.0197). 2) There was a significant difference in attitude between the experimental groups and control group(F=3.29, P=0.0469). 3) There was a non-significant difference in behavior between the experimental groups and control group(F=0.00, P=0.9512). 4) In the experimental group II, there was highly significant increase in behavior after token economy(t=4.5252, P=0.0005).
CONCLUSION
It was found that the respiratory communicable disease prevention program for preschool children was effective in changing the preschoolers' knowledge and attitude on the respiratory communicable disease prevention, but not enough for changing the preschoolers' behavior. Token economy was improved as an effective and strong method for inducing desirable changes of preschoolers' behavior.

Direction in Health Education of smoking Prevention for Elementary School Children.

In order to provide a desirable direction for the health education on preventing smoking of elementary school students, by understanding the views held by elementary school teachers on smoking prevention education, 529 teachers at elementary schools located in Seoul were responded by constructed questionnaires during the period of Nov. 15 to Dec. 18 1999. The results of the survey analysis were as follows: 1. 91.9% of the respondents said that schools should offer education programs on preventing smoking, and this view was more strongly shared by teachers with religions than non-religious ones. 2.37.6% of teachers responded that the education should start with 4th-5th graders, while 36.0% opted for 6th grades. With regard to the appropriate class in providing such education, 41.1% selected physical education (PE), followed by extracurricular activity class with 28.8%, 45.1% of the respondents said discussion would be the most effective education method, while 39.9% recommended using experiments. fall in diseases and growth and developmental defect were pointed out as the most interesting topic for students by 33.2% and 28.1% of the surveyed, respectively. As for the most effective media for education, 57.2% recommended video, followed by computer games(19.2%) and cartoons (20.0%). 64.1% of the teachers picked school nurses as the most appropriate person in carrying out the education. The results of the finding show that it would be most desirable to provide health education on preventing smoking to senior elementary schoolers during the PE or extracurricular activity class by school nurses. The program would be structured to first show video clips on growth and developmental defect or fall in diseases resulting from smoking and to have discussions or experiments on related matters.

A Study on the Status of Health Education of Kindergartens for Preschoolers.

Disease prevention and health promotions are basically needed to be healthy, health education si the most useful mean to accomplish them, Preschool children are being developed, their health problem can effect their health status through their lives. This study was attempted to survey for status of health education of kindergarten for preshoolers and to provide the basic precious data for nursing intervention. The subjects were 51 kidergarten teachers. The data were collected by the questionnaires, which consists of 25 items concerning daily life habits of children and 1 item concerning the problems of health education for preschoolers. The data were analyzed by SAS program. The results of this study are as followed ; 1. The most frequently educated subjects were 'adequate and safe play' and 'hand washing', 'walking and running straightly', 'oral hygiene or tooth brushing', 'walking staires'. 2. The most frequently used teaching method was the explaining. 3. The most frequently used instructional media was the pictures. The slide films and OHP was seldomly used media. 4. The most effective teaching method which perceived by the kindergarten teachers was role play. Discussion and compensation/reinforcement were comparatively effective method also. 5. The most effective instructional media which perceived by the kindergarten teachers was a real object/model. 6. The problems of health education for preschoolers were 'deficiency of developed health educational programs' and 'inconsistency between parents' education and kindergarten teachers' education', 'deficiency of instructional media'. The other problems were ' the knowledge deficit of teachers themselves' and 'the difficulty of measure the effect of education', 'time deficit'.
Conclusion
ally, we have to realize the health of children is the future of our health, and reinforce the health education for preschoolers to accomplish the disease prevention and health promotion.

Knowledge of Good Posture and Postural Habits in Elementary School Children.

PURPOSE
S: The purposes of this study were to identify the level of knowledge of good posture and postural habits among elementary school children and to identify the relationship between knowledge of good posture and postural habits.
METHOD
A descriptive correlational study was conducted. The participants were 507 elementary school children in Jangheung County. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation were used for data analysis.
RESULTS
The percentage of correct answer for the knowledge test was 65.83%. Postural habits were not good. Although the strength of correlation was low, there is a statistically significant positive correlation between knowledge and postural habits. Not only school health nurses but also class teachers and parents played important roles in spinal health education. Educational needs for spinal health are high.
CONCLUSION
Although more research in this area is warranted, there is a pressing need for interventions aimed at developing healthy habits that promote postural hygiene among elementary school children. Development and evaluation of back education programs in elementary school is necessary.
