Factors Affecting the Practice of Accident Prevention Behavior in Middle-school Students
Seon Su Kim, Mi Yu
Child Health Nurs Res 2019;25(4):388-397.   Published online October 31, 2019
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4094/chnr.2019.25.4.388
Purpose
This study aimed to identify the degree of accident prevention behavior, self-esteem, self-regulation ability, and social support among middle-school students, and investigate factors influencing their practice of accident prevention behaviors.
Methods
The participants were 174 students from two middle schools located in J city. Data were collected from December 28, 2017 to February 9, 2018 using self-reported questionnaires.
Results
The mean score were 3.08±0.37 of 4 for practice of accident prevention behaviors, 3.07±0.57 of 4 for self-esteem, 3.69±0.48 of 5 for self-regulation ability, and 3.38±0.75 of 5 for social support. Positive correlations were found among self-regulation ability, self-esteem, social support, and practice of accident prevention behaviors. The factors influencing the practice of accident prevention behaviors were personality (being ‘haste’) (β=-.20, p=.003), self- regulation ability (β=.48, p<.001), and social support (β=.23, p<.001). These factors explained 39.0% of the variance in practice of accident prevention behaviors.
Conclusion
It was found that the middle-school students engaged in prevention behavior to an extent that was insufficient to prevent accidents. Therefore, it is necessary to develop intervention strategies to improve the practice of accident prevention behavior among middle-school students, considering self-regulation ability, social support, and personality, which affect the practice of accident prevention behaviors.

Parents’ Perception and Behaviors regarding Child Safety Accidents
Shin-Jeong Kim, Jung Min Lee, Ji young Min
Child Health Nurs Res 2017;23(1):91-100.   Published online January 31, 2017
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4094/chnr.2017.23.1.91
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate parents’ perception and behaviors in the case of a child safety accident.
Methods
The participants were 254 parents of children under 12 years old. Data were collected from October 12 to November 25, 2016 using self-report questionnaire.
Results
The mean score for parental perception and behaviors showed a high score of 3.12±0.30. In addition, the top three categories were drug management (3.45±0.54), prevention of burns (3.34±0.52), and vehicle safety (3.34±0.44). The overall difference in categories of perception and behaviors about child safety accidents according to demographic characteristics of participants, was developmental age (F=5.616, p=.004). Most of the categories had significant correlation with other categories.
Conclusion
Findings in this study show parental perception and behaviors were relatively high. It is recommended that safety education for parents should be done for a healthy life for their children.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation of critical thinking disposition and problem solving process, and the simulation-based assessment of clinical competence based on a survey of college nursing students.
METHODS
In this descriptive correlation study, data for 214 nursing students were analyzed using t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients.
RESULTS
Critical thinking disposition, problem solving process, and simulation-based assessment of clinical competence averaged 3.76+/-0.46 (out of 5), 3.67+/-0.47 (5), and 1.51+/-0.17 (2), respectively. A significant difference in scores for simulation-based assessment of clinical competence was found between the high-scoring group and low-scoring group in critical thinking disposition. A significant positive correlation was found between critical thinking disposition and nursing assessment, a sub-domain of clinical competence.
CONCLUSION
The results suggest that success in simulation-based learning requires critical thinking disposition in the nursing students, and their critical thinking disposition plays a positive role in nursing assessment, which evaluates the patient's status in a complex situation. Simulation-based learning programs help assess the students' levels in their clinical judgement and performance, and identify their strengths and weaknesses so that the instructor can evaluate and improve the current teaching method.
