Purpose The goal of this study was to construct a structural equation model of job engagement in pediatric nurses based on Tims and Bakker's job crafting model.
Methods In total, 203 pediatric nurses participated in this study, which was conducted to analyze the relationships among the concepts of job demands, job resources, person-job fit, job crafting and job engagement. Data were collected from July 24 to August 30, 2017, and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 21.0.
Results The hypothetical model appeared to fit the data. Six of the nine hypotheses selected for the hypothetical model were statistically significant. The job engagement model showed significant direct effects for job crafting, person-job fit and job resources, which collectively explained 61.5% of the variation in pediatric nurses' job engagement.
Conclusion Based on the findings of this study, a strategy will be needed to improve job resources and person-job fit in order to promote job engagement among pediatric nurses. Job crafting was affected by the factors of job resources and person-job fit, which should be addressed in job crafting promotion programs.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an educational intervention by evaluating neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking disposition, problem- solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance after developing and operating a simulation-based neonatal emergency airway management education program for nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit.
Methods The participants were 30 nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Data were collected from June 6 to 15, 2018 and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22.0.
Results The results of the pretest and posttest for each educational group showed statistically significant improvements in neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking, problem- solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance.
Conclusion The simulation-based neonatal emergency airway management training program was an effective educational program that enhanced neonatal emergency airway management knowledge, critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability, and confidence in clinical performance among nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit. Therefore, it is suggested that the program described in this study can contribute to improving nursing quality by enhancing the ability of nurses to cope with emergencies in practice. It can also be used for education for new nurses and contribute to the development of nurses’ practices.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency, perceived importance and competence of pediatric emergency nursing practice (PENP) in nurses who cared for pediatric patients in the emergency department.
Methods This cross-sectional descriptive study analyzed 175 emergency department nurses caring for pediatric patients at 7 university hospitals with more than 500 beds, located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The measurement tool was modified from the Classification of Standard Nursing Activities to measure the frequency, importance of PENP, and nursing competence. It comprised 143 items in 16 domains of PENP.
Results The most frequent nursing practice was the domain of ‘nursing records and environmental management’ and the least frequent practice was the ‘research and consulting’ domain. The nursing care domain perceived to be most important by nurses was ‘specialized intensive nursing care’. The nursing care domain with the highest level of nursing competence was ‘hygiene care’, and the domain with the least level of nursing competence was the ‘research and consulting’.
Conclusion These results will be utilized as basic data for future pediatric emergency nursing education initiatives and for establishing priorities of nursing policy to improve health care for children admitted to the emergency department.
Purpose This study aimed to identify stress levels due to end-of-life care, coping strategies, and psychological well-being among nurses in neonatal intensive care unit, and to investigate the effect of stress levels and coping strategies on their well-being.
Methods A total of 128 nurses in the neonatal intensive care units of general hospitals in B city participated. The data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, ANOVA, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression with SPSS version 22.0.
Results The coping strategy that nurses most often used was seeking social support. The factors affecting the well-being of the participants were wishful thinking, problem-focused coping and seeking social support, in order. Those 3 variables explained 21 % of the total variance in psychological well-being. Problem-focused coping and seeking social support were positively associated with psychological well-being, while wishful thinking showed a negative association.
Conclusion In order to improve the psychological well-being of nurses in neonatal intensive care units, it is necessary to provide nurses with a program to build a social support system and to improve their problem-based coping skills.

Purpose This study aimed to compare the quality of nursing care as perceived by registered nurses and mothers of hospitalized children in South Korea.
Methods This was a descriptive study that recruited 70 mothers of hospitalized children and 70 nurses in pediatric units in university hospitals as participants. The quality of pediatric nursing care was measured using importance and performance scores for 19 items describing various elements of nursing care. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent t-test.
Results The hospitalized children mothers’mean importance scores were significantly higher than those of the nurses (t=2.94, p=.004). However, there were no significant differences in the mean performance scores of nurses and mothers (t=0.91, p=.363) or between nurses’and mothers’perceptions of quality of nursing care, with the exception of a significant difference for the quality of explanations (t=2.78, p=.006). The quality of explanations was assessed more positively by nurses than by mothers.
Conclusion This study suggests that when developing strategies to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric wards, ensuring that pediatric nurses provide detailed explanations should be considered as a way to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric units.

Purpose This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and performance of developmentally supportive positioning for premature infants (DSPP) among neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses.
Methods The participants in this study were 131 nurses working in the NICU at five university hospitals in Daejeon and the city of Cheong-ju. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficients using SPSS for Windows version 22.0.
Results NICU nurses’ average DSPP knowledge score was 24.7 out of 33.0, and their average DSPP performance score was 3.2 out of 4.0. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between knowledge and performance of DSPP (r=.32, p<.001).
Conclusion To improve the level of NICU nurses’ knowledge and performance of DSPP, educational programs should be developed and their effectiveness should be verified.

Purpose The purpose of this descriptive survey study was to characterize the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses and to elucidate the mediating effects of the nurse-parent partnership on that relationship.
Methods The subjects of the study were 174 nurses who had worked in a pediatric ward in a university hospital, general hospital, or children's hospital. Data were collected from June 20, 2016 to August 10, 2016 and analysed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and three-step mediated regression analysis in SPSS version 22.0 for Windows.
Results The nurse-parent partnership had significant effects on clinical decision-making and job satisfaction, with an explanatory power of 19% and 26%, respectively. The nurse-parent partnership had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction (Sobel test: Z=4.31, p<.001).
Conclusion The nurse-parent partnership had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between clinical decision-making and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses. Therefore, in order to improve the job satisfaction of pediatric nurses, it is necessary to develop effective educational programs and strategies to address their clinical decision-making and their experiences of the nurse-parent partnership.

Purpose Nurses experience burnout related to various factors. For this descriptive research job stress, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue were examined as to their relationship to burnout in nurses from children’s hospital.
Methods The participants were 305 nurses working in children’s hospital. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout.
Results Nurses in children’s hospital experienced a greater than moderate degree of job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout, whereas differences existed according to general characteristics. Job stress, compassion fatigue and burnout showed a significant positive correlation and results of compassion fatigue and burnout were similar. Also, job stress, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue were associated with burnout in nurses working in children’s hospital.
Conclusion Findings indicate that as longer work experience is accompanied by higher job stress and burnout, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to reduce burnout among career nurses exposed to greater job stress in children’s hospital.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses’ perceptions on child abuse.
Methods In this cross-sectional descriptive study, data were collected using a questionnaire and 217 nurses working in seven general hospitals were surveyed. The perception scale was divided into 4 subscales: physical, psychological, sexual abuse and neglect.
Results Nurses who suspected child abuse accounted for 18.1% of the nurses, and 41.9% of the nurses stated that they did not to report suspected child abuse. The nurses reported receiving only a little education about the prevention of child abuse. The mean score for perception on child abuse was high (3.59±0.31). Recognition of sexual abuse ranked highest, psychological abuse ranked lowest.
Conclusion The findings from this research provide baseline information for understanding nurses’ perceptions on child abuse, and may help in the development of appropriate education programs that will enable nurses to report child abuse.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate NICU nurses’ nursing interventions for pain and factors affecting nursing interventions for pain.
Methods Participants were 120 NICU nurses from 5 university hospitals located in Daejeon Metropolitan City and Chungcheong Province. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Duncan test, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis with SPSS Windows 23.0 IBM program.
Results The factors affecting nursing interventions for pain included knowledge about non-pharmacological nursing interventions for pain and self-efficacy about nursing interventions for pain. These variables explained 28.3% of nursing interventions for pain.
Conclusion The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop education programs in which effective nursing interventions for neonatal pain are considered. The programs should be made available to NICU nurses.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between social capital, labor intensity and incivility and effects the job burnout in pediatric nurses.
Methods A survey is conducted with 186 nurses working in pediatric units at 10 hospital in B, Y, K city. The data was analyzed with SPSS 21.0 program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, Scheffés test and multiple linear regression analysis.
Results A score of 3.31 out of 5 for the level of social capital, a score of 3.16 out of 5 on the labor intensity, and 2.20 points on a 5 point on incivility, 4.15 points on a 7 point on job burnout. Job burnout explained 21.7% of the variance in incivility, social capital-shared values, job satisfaction, and labor intensity.
Conclusion The findings indicate that the major factors effecting pediatric nurses job burnout are incivility. Thus, in order to reduce pediatric nurses job burnout are to investigate degree of incivility, it is nesessary to develop intervention programs to incivility and labor intensity that reduced organizational level of measures need to establish.

Purpose To investigate the perception and barriers of Kangaroo-Mother Care (KMC) among nurses in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU).
Methods Participants were 131 nurses working in NICU who completed self-report questionnaires which included information regarding perception, barriers, and practice of KMC. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients.
Results Of the participants, 33.6% reported the practice of KMC in their NICU, with 75.6% wanting to receive training in KMC and 31.3% having received KMC education. Most of the participants agreed that KMC enhances attachment, parental confidence, and effective breast feeding but they reported a negative perception in providing KMC for premature infants weighing less than 1,000 grams or intubated premature infants. Major barriers to practicing KMC were safety of infants, possible work overload for nurses, as well as absence of consistent guidelines. Barriers to KMC among nurses who received the KMC training were lower than nurses who did not receive the KMC training (t=-2.11, p=.037).
Conclusion Education program and standardized clinical practice protocol should be developed to foster the positive perception and to reduce nurse barriers to KMC.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among knowledge and attitude toward palliative care and perception of death for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses.
Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 110 nurses who work in NICUs in South Korea. The participants filled out a questionnaire regarding their knowledge, attitude towards palliative care and perception of death. The attitude scale was divided into 3 subscales: comfort level, nurses’ role and nurses’ involvement with family.
Results Comfort level regarding attitude towards palliative care was positively correlated with knowledge (r=.220, p=.016) and the perception of death (r=.194, p=.042). Nurses’ role showed a positive correlation with perception of death (r=.395, p=.001).
Conclusion NICU nurses’ knowledge of palliative care was below standard across the board, implying that there is a definite need for palliative care education for nurses. The education program for palliative care should include a section that focuses on fostering a positive perception of death as well as defining and delineating the role of nurses.

Purpose This study was conducted to examine the effect of education on infection control for multidrug resistant organism (MDRO).
Methods One group pre-post time series design was used. Infection control education for MDRO infection was provided to nurses working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Knowledge and recognition were evaluated before and after education. Hand hygiene compliance, MDRO isolation rate and central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rate were used as outcome variables. Data from 45 nurses was used for analysis.
Results General knowledge about MDRO increased (p=.011). Responses to questions about image of MDRO and MDRO management tended to change in a positive direction (p = .046). Hand hygiene compliance was 100% at pre-test, 79.5% during education period and 98.4% at post-education period. MDRO isolation rate was 6.83 per 1,000 patient days at pre-test, 10.24 during education period and 6.68 at post-education period. CLABSI rate was 3.76 per 1,000 central line days at pre-test, 6.84 during education period and 4.71 at post-education period.
Conclusion Findings indicate that the education program is effective in improving knowledge about MDRO in NICU nurses. However, more reliable indicators should be used to determine long-term effects.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting turnover intention in pediatric nurses.
Methods A survey was conducted with 212 nurses working in pediatric units at 15 hospitals in Busan, K city. Data were collected from September 1 to October 31, 2014. and analyzed with SPSS PASW 18.0.
Results In Stepwise multiple regression analysis, factors affecting the nurses’ turnover intention were emotional burnout (β = .37, p < .001), relationship between nurse and doctor (β = .20, p < .001), turnover plan (β = .17, p < .001), and annual salary (β = -.13, p < .001), and these variables accounted for 32.2% of the variance in turnover intention.
Conclusion The findings indicate that the major factors influencing pediatric nurses’ turnover intention are emotional burnout, cooperative relationship between nurse and doctor, turnover plan, and annual salary. Thus, in order to reduce pediatric nurses’ turnover intention, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to prevent emotional burnout, the most influencing factor, and enhance cooperative relationship between nurse and doctor and to examine their effects.

Purpose Child Health nurse practitioners (CHNPs) in Korea have important roles in disease management and health promotion for children and adolescents. Yet, practices of CHNPs licensed and employed in hospitals have not been adequately identified. Thus, in this study the scope of practice by CHNPs and job satisfaction and stress were investigated and compared according to the CHNPs’ position in the working place.
Methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used. All 53 licensed CHNPs participated in the mail survey which included a 71-item questionnaire on job performance and job satisfaction and a job contents questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, x2 test, independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare CHNPs employed as nurse practitioner (NP) and CHNPs employed as staff nurses.
Results Compared to CHNPs employed as staff nurses, CHNPs employed as NPs more frequently provided education, environment management, coordination and research in their practice areas. No significant difference was found in job satisfaction between the two groups except for the administration and income subdomains. Only the physical exertion subdomain in job stress was stressful to CHNP employed as staff nurse.
Conclusions Job performance of CHNPs in Korea needs to be revised to include more practical practice in education, coordination, and research related areas.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the effect of a cultural competency promotion program for nurses in obstetrics-gynecology and pediatrics.
Methods The cultural competency promotion program was developed through the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) steps. In this quasi-experimental study, 30 nurses in obstetrics-gynecology and pediatrics were assigned to the experimental group and 34 nurses were assigned to the control group. The experimental group received this program once a week for four weeks and each class lasted one hour. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, X2-test and Fisher’s exact test with the IBM SPSS Statistics version 21.0 program.
Results After attending the program, cultural competency (t = 8.30, p < .001) increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. There were also significant differences between two groups in cultural awareness (t = 7.53, p < .001), cultural attitude (t = 6.41, p < .001), and cultural knowledge & skills (t = 7.79, p < .001) as components of cultural competency.
Conclusion The results of this study indicate that this cultural competency program is effective and efficient for nurses in obstetrics-gynecology and pediatrics and can help nurses provide appropriate multicultural nursing care in multicultural society.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify effects of a maternal-child health education program for nurses in Tigray, Ethiopia. METHODS One-group pre-posttest design was used. The maternal-child health (MCH) education program was given to nurses from 5 health centers in Tigray, Ethiopia. Knowledge and confidence levels were measured before and after each education session. Data were analyzed using paired t-test. RESULTS The topics of the 5 educational sessions were family planning, antenatal care, care during labor, immunization, and integrated management of neonate, and child illness. Knowledge scores (1st: Z=3.931, p=.001; 2nd: Z=6.189, p<.001; 3rd: Z=5.658, .001, 4th: Z=8.734, .001, 5th: Z=14.167, .001) and confidence levels (1st: Z=8.467, .001; 2nd: Z=4.183, .001; 3rd: Z=4.992, .001) improved significantly. CONCLUSION The findings of this study imply that the MCH education program for nurses was effective in developing the maternal-child health capacity of the nurses in Tigray, Ethiopia.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate pediatric nurse parent partnership and factors associated with this partnership. METHODS A survey was conducted with 158 nurses working in pediatric practice at one of 7 hospitals in Seoul, Incheon, and Chungcheongbuk Province. Data were collected from September to December 2013, and analyzed with SPSS Windows 21.0. RESULTS In hierarchial multiple regression analysis, self-efficacy (beta=.19, p=.016), clinical decision making (beta=.15, p=.046), and empowerment (beta=.29, p=.001) were associated with pediatric nurse parent partnership, after adjusting for marital status, children, education, position and satisfaction with work unit. These factors accounted for 44.0% of the variance in the pediatric nurse parent relationship. CONCLUSION These results suggest that pediatric nurse parent partnership could be influenced by the predictors.
Ultimately, intervention programs focusing on these factors should be effective in helping pediatric nurses improve partnership with parents.

PURPOSE The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses' experience in caring for infants who are approaching death and to identity the meaning and structure of their experiences. METHODS The participants were eight nurses who had experience in caring for these infants. In-depth interviews were performed from December, 2012 to February, 2013 until data were fully saturated. Collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. RESULTS Four theme clusters were extracted from fifteen themes. The four theme clusters of the NICU nurses' experience in caring for infants who are dying were: 1) Crossroads between life and comfort of infants approaching death, 2) emotional suffering at the death of the infant, 3) adapting and coping with the death of the infant, 4) new expectations for caring for infants who are dying. CONCLUSION The results of the study provide useful information in understanding NICU nurses' experience in caring for infants who are dying and establishing effective strategies to support these nurses.

PURPOSE To provide basic data to improve the practice environment of pediatric nurses by identifying their recognition of nursing professionalism and self-efficacy, and to examine the pediatric nurse parent partnership. METHODS Participants in the study were 165 nurses with 6 months of work experience in a university children's hospital in Seoul. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. Research tools measuring nursing professionalism, self-efficacy, and pediatric nurse parent partnership were used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS PASW statistics 19.0. RESULTS There were statistically significant positive correlations for nursing professionalism and self-efficacy (r=.359, p<.001), nursing professionalism and the pediatric nurse parent partnership (r=.487, p<.001), and self-efficacy and the pediatric nurse parent partnership (r=.442, p<.001).According to the general characteristics of the participants, nurses who were married, practiced religion and had children tended to have higher nursing professionalism. Higher self-efficacy was exhibited by nurses who were older, married and raising children and the pediatric nurse parent partnership tended to have higher scores for nurses who practiced religion and worked in a general ward. CONCLUSION The findings indicate that higher nursing professionalism and self-efficacy result in a better pediatric nurse parent partnership which should improve the practice environment of pediatric patients.
