Effects of a Mother-fetus Interaction Promotion Program on Sleep and Activity in Mothers and Infants.

PURPOSE
This study was done to evaluate effects of a mother-fetus interaction promotion program on maternal and infant sleep/activity regulation, and examine the correlation between maternal and infant sleep/activity.
METHODS
Thirty-four mother-infant dyads were recruited from an OB-GY clinic with postpartum care center, and assigned to the intervention group (17) or control group (17). Data were collected from January 18 to August 5 2005. A programmed education focused on mother-fetus interaction was provided to the intervention group in the 3rd trimester. Maternal sleep/activity record was completed at 32-36 weeks gestation and infant sleep/activity record was completed for one month after birth.
RESULTS
During the 3rd trimester, there were no significant differences in maternal sleep/activity between the groups, except for frequency of mothers' night awakening and urination at night. There were no significant differences in infant sleep, but significant difference was found in feeding times between the groups. Correlation of maternal sleep in the 3rd trimester and infant waking times was significant.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study indicate that maternal sleep/activity during pregnancy influences infant sleep/activity at 3-4 weeks, and that nursing interventions to regulate maternal sleep/activity provided to primiparas can be beneficial to the regularity of infant sleep/activity patterns.

Research Trends on Parent-Child Relationships from the Perspective of Nursing.

PURPOSE
This study was done to provide a basis for future theory development by analyzing the phenomenon of parent-child relationships based on the 4 areas described by Kim (2000).
METHODS
A descriptive research design was used to identify research trends in nursing related to the phenomenon of parent-child relationships.
RESULTS
Before 1990, the trend in research design was quantitative designs, but since 1990, qualitative research has also been done. Mothers were the most popular research target for these studies followed by mothers and children together. In analyzing the 4 areas outlined by Kim (2000), it was found that most of the research was done on client domain and parents. The research concepts relevant to the essentialistic concept of research target, were 'child rearing', 'breast-feeding' and 'attachment'. For problematic concepts, the concept of 'stress' was continuously dealt with over the period and for the health-care experiential concept, 'adjustment' and 'coping' by parents were the main focus of research.
CONCLUSION
The results show that parent-child relationship research was mainly concentrated on research participants and concepts. In the future, improvements should be made in research development of nursing practice programs and development of theory, to address the complete phenomenon of parent-child relationships.

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to identify late school-aged children's knowledge, and practical will in the practice of cancer prevention lifestyle, and to examine the relations between these variables and factors that influence practice.
METHODS
The participants included 525 fifth and sixth grade students from 8 elementary schools in J and S cities. Data were collected in December 2008 using self-report questionnaires developed by the authors and were analyzed using the SPSS program.
RESULTS
Mean scores were, for knowledge of cancer prevention lifestyle, 0.76+/-0.11 out of a possible 1, practical will, 4.05+/-0.55 out of a possible 5, and practice, 3.66+/-0.41 also out of 5. There were differences in knowledge (F=4.39, p=.013), practical will (F=18.35, p<.001), and practice (F=29.13, p<.001) according to academic achievement and in practical will (F=3.68, p<.001) and practice (F=3.01, p=.003) according to grade. There were positive correlations between knowledge and practical will (r=.205, p<.001), knowledge and practice (r=.181, p<.001), practical will and practice (r=.628, p<.001). Practice will and knowledge of cancer prevention lifestyle showed a significant influence on practice.
CONCLUSION
Results of this study indicate that effective strategies should be developed to motivate the practical will for the practice of cancer prevention lifestyle during childhood.

Elementary School Students' Coping Ability in Emergency Situations.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to improve coping abilities of elementary school students in emergency situations.
METHOD
The data were collected from 1633 3-6th grade elementary school students using a self-report questionnaire.
RESULTS
1) The mean score for the coping ability of the students was low at .38 (+/-.36). 2) The mean scores for the 8 categories were, [Care for common symptoms], .54 (+/-.48), [Call for help & check], .47 (+/-.43), [Care for injury by heat.cold & foreign body], .39 (+/-.45), [Care for tissue damage], .36 (+/-.44), [Offering help], .36 (+/-.42), [Rescue & escape], .31 (+/-.51), [Evacuation], .28 (+/-.49), and [Appropriate response for the situation], .27 (+/-.43). The mean scores for 2 areas were, 'Acting tips', .35 (+/-.36) and 'First aid', .42 (+/-.40). There were significant differences in coping ability according to students' gender (t=4.964, p<.001), and family type (t=-2.484, p=.013). 4) Among the categories, there were significant correlations between all 8 categories and significant correlation between 'Acting tips' and 'First aid' (r=.808, p<.001), 'Acting tips' and 'Coping ability' (r=.956, p<.001), and 'First aid' and 'Coping ability' (r=.946, p<.001).
CONCLUSION
The findings indicate a need for programs to improve the coping ability of elementary school students in emergency situations.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to provide descriptive data about the characteristics of pediatric patients and nursing interventions in Regional Emergency Medical Centers (REMC).
METHODS
A retrospective design was used to examine the medical records of 4,310 children. The clinical data and nursing terminologies of REMC were analyzed using the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC).
RESULTS
Male toddlers dominated the sample. The mean age of the children was 3.51 yr. In more than half of the visits, patients arrived between from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., on a weekday. There were only 189 ambulance transports to REMC, (4.4% of visits). The most frequent injuries were due to falls (28.0%) and contusions (27.3%), but the most common reasons for visits were non-injury (73.4%): fever, cough/shortness of breath, seizures, and abdominal pain. Of the 4,310 visits, 27.8% spent 6-24 hr in the REMC, while 33% resulted in hospital admission and 2.1% in transfer to another hospital. Of the 17,929 nursing interventions, 17,909 elements (99.9%) were classified under NIC. All the listed NIC interventions, however, were not reflected in the level of practice demonstrated by REMC nurses.
CONCLUSION
These results can enhance the understanding of pediatric emergency nursing interventions and can make NIC more applicable.

Contents Analysis of Meaning in Life of Higher Grade Elementary School Students.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to explore and understand life and meaning in life of elementary school students.
METHODS
Data from 1,790 higher grade elementary school students were analyzed for content of meaning in life.
RESULTS
The students described the following: 1) Meanings of living existence included, 'living things', 'importance', 'human life', 'family', 'event', 'eternity', 'origin of life', 'disease', and, 'protection'. 2) Four categories were found for reasons why human life is important, 'solitary', 'limitation', 'valuables', and 'living'. 3) Things that one can do to protect the value of human life were, 'doing safely', 'keep things well', 'altruistic behavior', 'doing sound activity', 'preservation & development', and 'devotion of oneself'. 4) Meaning of life included 'to accomplish plans', and 'to do things' 5) Cases when students felt life had meaning were 'perform meaningful behavior', 'comfortable emotionally', and 'receiving help from others'. 6) The methods by which to live a meaningful life were 'working diligently', 'serving', and 'doing rightly'.
CONCLUSION
These results suggest that students recognize the meaning of life in a most positive way and with a relatively wide scope, but as a few students had a negative orientation, age-appropriate and more systematic education programs are needed.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of self-differentiation, family function and mental health among adolescents.
METHODS
The data were collected from 967 adolescents and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS program.
RESULTS
Mental health differed according to grades, sibling position, father's education and mother's education. Self-differentiation and family function had a significant negative correlation with mental health. Multiple regression analysis showed recognition.emotional function, emotional cutoff and family projection as influencing self-differentiation, Grades, affective responsiveness in family function, and sibling position explained 20.8% of the total variance in mental health.
CONCLUSION
The findings show that self-differentiation and family function influence mental health, indicating a need to develop nursing intervention programs to enhance adolescents' mental health and prevent negative outcomes. For these programs, the family must be included.

Educational Needs for Prevention of Cell Phone Addiction in Korean Adolescents.

PURPOSE
This study was done to develop an educational needs scale for the prevention of cell phone addiction and to investigate the educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction in Korean adolescents.
METHODS
The participants were 609 adolescents in one middle school and two high schools. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and analyzed using the SPSS program.
RESULTS
Twenty items regarding the educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction were selected for the final scale, and categorized into 3 factors (diagnosis and management, properties, and definition and actual condition) which explained 61.09% of the total variance. The educational needs for the prevention of cell phone addiction in adolescents were moderate, with items related to diagnosis and management ranked as most important. The educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction varied by gender, grade, academic achievement, perception of health status, satisfaction with school, and text messaging participants.
CONCLUSION
The findings indicate that educational needs for diagnosis and management of cell phone addiction ranked as most important in adolescents. Therefore, programs related to the prevention and management of cell phone addiction based on the educational needs of adolescents should be provided.

Development and Evaluation of a Combined Health Promotion Program for Preschool Children.

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to develop and investigate the effect of a combined health promotion program for preschool children and their parents.
METHODS
Physical examinations were done for 993 preschoolers in 12 preschools. Their parents (n=727) completed a questionnaire on health status and health knowledge of their children and 35 teachers in preschools completed one on health knowledge of preschoolers. Based on the results of the physical examinations and survey, a combined health promotion program was developed. In order to evaluate the program, 35 teachers and 104 parents participated in the program. The effects of the program were tested and health knowledge before and after the program was analyzed.
RESULTS
Health knowledge of parents and teachers increased significantly after attending the combined health promotion program.
CONCLUSION
In order to promote the health of preschoolers, parents and teachers need to participate in combined health programs that provide an opportunity for preschoolers to have a physical examination and their parents to learn about the health care for their children.

Parents' Perception, Knowledge and Self-Efficacy in Management of Childhood Fever.

PURPOSE
Fever is a common symptom of illness in children that is often misunderstood and inappropriately managed by parents. The purposes of this study were to investigate perception, knowledge of childhood fever and fever management and self-efficacy in fever management by parents and to identify the relationship between knowledge of childhood fever and fever management, and self-efficacy in management of fever.
METHODS
A descriptive correlation study was used with 101 parents of children ages 3 months to 5 yr who were seen in a pediatric outpatient clinic. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, t-test or ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for data analysis.
RESULTS
Many parents reported a high level of fear about fever and its possible complications. Most parents used over-the-counter medications to reduce fever even when their children had mild to moderate fever. The mean correct percent on the knowledge scale was 51.0%. Most parents did not recognize the benefits of fever. There were statistically significant positive correlations between knowledge of fever and fever management and self-efficacy in management of fever.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate a need to develop and evaluate educational programs that will provide parent education on fever and fever management.

PURPOSE
The study was done to explore the effect of perception of parental rearing attitude and social support on self-efficacy and stress among school-aged children, then to supply information for health promotion of children and to promote multi-cultural communication between Korea and China.
METHODS
The participants for this study were 180 elementary students each, from Korea and China. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test, correlation analysis and AMOS.
RESULTS
Social support had a direct effect on self-efficacy for both Korean and Chinese children. In Korea parental rearing attitude had greater direct effect on stress than social support and self-efficacy. But in China only, parental rearing attitude had direct effect on stress.
CONCLUSION
These findings provide support for perception of parental rearing attitude, social support, and self-efficacy as predictive variables of stress in Korean and Chinese school-aged children.

PURPOSE
This study was done to examine effects of a discharge education program using on-line community on parenting stress, baby care confidence for mothers of premature infants and health problem of premature infants.
METHODS
Using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design, 32 participants were assigned to an experimental (17) or a control group (15). Mothers in the experimental group were introduced to the discharge education program 2 weeks before the baby was discharged. They participated in the on-line community for 4 weeks after discharge. Parenting Stress Index and Baby Care Confidence Scale were utilized for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square-test, Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney U test with the SPSS program 16.0 version.
RESULTS
In the experimental group, mean scores for parenting stress were lower than for the control group (Z=-3.176, p=.001), while scores for confidence in baby care were higher than for the control group (Z=-3.195, p=.001).
CONCLUSION
Findings indicate that discharge education programs using on-line community have the positive effect of decreasing parenting stress and increasing baby care confidence for mothers and decreasing health problems for infants. Therefore utilization of the internet and online community to educate parents of premature infants is recommended.

Pain Response to Procedural Pain in Premature Infants.

PURPOSE
To explore premature infants' pain response to routine procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
METHODS
The participants were 56 preterm infants who showed 149 pain responses to 8 high frequency routine procedures which were evaluated using the Premature Infant Pain Scale (PIPS). Videotaped recording was used for data collection. Data were analyzed with descriptive analysis, paired t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
RESULTS
PIPS scores for each procedure were as follows; for removal of central catheter dressing, 6.17 (2.04), venous sampling, 6.12 (2.87), intramuscular injection, 6.05 (2.38), insertion of a peripheral line, 5.38 (2.16), insertion of feeding tube, 4.40 (1.34), heel stick, 4.33 (1.23), insertion of central line, 4.00 (2.12), and endotracheal suctioning, 2.90 (1.25). PIPS score was negatively correlated with gestational age (r=-.218, p=.007) and birth weight (r=-.249, p=.002) among general characteristics of the infants.
CONCLUSION
The majority of 8 routine procedures were found to be painful for premature infants in the NICU. Therefore, adequate pain management related to procedures should be provided to premature infant in the NICU.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parenting behavior, parenting efficacy, adaptation stress and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) among mothers who have defected from North Korean.
METHODS
A descriptive study was conducted to illustrate the parenting behavior, parenting efficacy, adaptation stress and PTSD and report the relationships among them. Data were collected between August and November of 2009 in Hanawon and 105 mothers who met eligibility criteria participated in the study.
RESULTS
Ignorant/controlling parenting behavior of parenting showed the highest score in our study. The level of parenting efficacy was 2.72+/-0.36 and adaptation stress level was 3.35+/-0.47 showing perceived hostility the highest and homesickness the lowest. Participants with moderate to severe PTSD accounted for 79.5% of the mothers, and 75% of them reported symptoms for 3 months or more. Authoritative parenting behavior showed negative relationships with parenting efficacy, cultural crisis and fear, adaptation stress and PTSD.
CONCLUSION
Mothers who have defected from showed negative parenting behaviors and high adaptation stress level and PTSD while parenting efficacy was high. These findings indicate that parenting intervention programs which can guide these mothers towards positive parenting behaviors need to be developed.
